Shorthand is the premier “scrollytelling” tool that anyone can use to develop beautiful, engaging digital content. Many organizations use Shorthand for communications, but it can also hold immense power and potential for helping communicate program and evaluation-related information that often gets dumped into too-long PDFs that people don’t read or complicated data dashboards that users don’t understand. Enter: data storytelling.
In this interactive workshop, attendees will see examples of Shorthand stories for a variety of social sector-related use cases and be introduced to the Shorthand platform. Participants will gain first-hand experience building a data-driven Shorthand story, including setting up an account, exploring Shorthand section templates, building out sections with prepared media and text, and embedding interactive Flourish graphics. As Shorthand is as easy as PowerPoint, participants will leave the session ready and able to develop and publish their own simple Shorthand story – without needing to know any code!
About the Speaker
Jenny Spencer is the founder and director of Untethered Impact, a boutique, woman-owned consulting studio supporting social sector organizations to understand their constituents, design innovative solutions, tell compelling and data-driven stories, and amplify their positive impact in the world.
Untethered Impact grew out of Jenny’s background as a mixed-methods researcher, evaluator, and data storyteller. After starting out at JVA Consulting (later Joining Vision and Action) in the Denver Metro area, she went on to work for Kimetrica in Washington, DC and Nairobi, Kenya and, for the last five years, as an independent consultant. Jenny has worked with clients ranging from NGOs and nonprofits to the US Government, the World Bank, and UN agencies and has covered a range of domestic and international topics. Untethered Impact believes so strongly in the power of Shorthand stories, they became a Shorthand Agency Partner.
